A Mid-19th century painted Pine cupboard originating from Northern Europe possibly Germany or Sweden.
Very well made and structurally solid this piece is a very useful size for any small space where you are looking to make a striking visual impact.
Two small top drawers with lovely handle details and double door cupboard below with original functioning lock with key.
I have painted the body in a pale blue typical of Gustavian furniture of the period and the top in a very deep brown, almost black to set it off from the blue base.
I used an original mixture of glues and gesso to create the crackled aged texture, then painted with a pale brown undercoat and then for the primary colours used natural pigments with animal skin glue to create the distemper paint.
Distemper has been used for hundreds of years on many of the early paintings of the Italian renaissance most notably by Raphael in the 16th century. Often using distemper on wood can leave the paint to crack and peel as it gets exposed to different temperatures and humidity but as this piece will come to live in a residential location these typical traits of distemper paint won't happen.
I have also coated the entire finished price in a solid natural wax and then softened with talc to create a velvety smooth feel to the surface.
The inside has a single shelf and I have given it a new coat of beeswax to nourish the old pine giving it a lovely natural smell and feel.
