A 19th century painted Carpenter's Chest or Toolbox.
This is a typically well made cabinet makers toolbox or blanket box as they were later used. Very heavy and with a sturdy structure with no weakness on the base.
Inside there are 3 removable pine storage boxes that span the width and length that are perfect for storing smaller objects.
It also still has its original lock and key so very handy for guarding anything you want to keep little wondering hands away from.
This was in a bit of a mess when I picked it up and so keeping in line with its age and heavy use over its life I chose to paint this with a very heavy patina. I mixed rustic browns and creams for the colours on the top & sides and painted the rim and the plinth in a dark green pigment.
As with much of my work I followed the process of using original recipes to create the paint and processes to age the finish with lovely crackles and worn away areas leaving an authentic look and texture.
The inside was left with all the original marks but has been thoroughly cleaned and waxed so is ready to use immediately.
